This report provides summary of a 24 February 2021 workshop titled “Modernizing Sanitary-Phytosanitary (SPS) Measures in CAREC and Use of Digital Certification” organized jointly by the CAREC Institute and the Asian Development Bank.

The CAREC Institute has updated the data for the CAREC Regional Integration Index (CRII) which measures progress in regional economic cooperation and integration among the 11 member countries of the ADB-supported CAREC Program.

In this issue, we provide details of the border-crossing improvement workshop and share several other workshop reports.

This workshop report summarizes contents of the virtual workshop conducted during 14-22 January 2021 by the CAREC Institute and ADB on the topic of border crossing improvement with participation of project managers of the ADB-funded projects and international development partners who shared lessons of border improvement projects and relevant acute topics with other CAREC representatives.

In a new working paper on financial inclusion and fintech in CAREC, our staff discuss financial inclusion as an imperative to achieving economic growth in a globalized market, and as an essential element to accomplish important objectives, such as poverty alleviation, anti-corruption measures, employment, social equity, and wealth redistribution.

In this issue we inform about our UN observer status, and provide details of the CAREC Ministerial and the Governing Council meetings. The inaugural issue of the CAREC Quarterly Economic Monitor and MOU with the Institute of Standardization is also announced here.

In an inaugural issue of the CAREC Institute Quarterly Economic Monitor (QEM), our Chief Economist team has compiled available data and worked out quarterly trends to gather a first glimpse of the emerging outlook as the world and the CAREC region learn to live with the pandemic while reliable vaccination options offer hope and confidence despite the overhang of the second wave and emergence of a more virulent new strain.

This policy brief is derived from the CAREC Institute’s research titled “Climate Insurance, Infrastructure and Governance in CAREC” and the namesake virtual workshop delivered in collaboration with the Asian Development Bank Institute (ADBI) and the Xinjiang Institute of Ecology and Geography (XIEG) of the Chinese Academy of Sciences on 18-19 June 2020.

In this issue, we inform that the Institute has signed the host city agreement. There is information on workshops and conferences regarding the topics of trans-Caspian transport and trade; Aral Sea restoration; biodiversity conservation; and water cooperation in Central Asia. COVID-19 and WASH related analysis is also shared.

Our workshop report of November 2020 scientific-practical conference summarizes participation of the CAREC Institute in the session regarding the climate change impact on infrastructure and logistics In CAREC. The conference itself focused on regional collaboration, informed by science, that can help solve climate-related challenges in Central Asia.

This report covers summary of a symposium titled “Ecological Restoration and Management of the Aral Sea” held by the CAREC Institute and Xinjiang Institute of Ecology and Geography of Chinese Academy of Sciences (XIEG) in collaboration with the National University of Uzbekistan during 24-25 November 2020.

This workshop report summarizes presentations and discussions of a joint webinar by the CAREC Institute and the Asian Development Bank Institute (ADBI) titled “Trans-Caspian Transport Corridor: Infrastructure and Trade” held during 16-20 November 2020.

This economic brief focusses on some megatrends that are accelerated by the COVID-19 pandemic. It discusses briefly what new technologies have emerged globally, how these change the organization of supply chains and globalization, and how COVID-19 impacts these developments.

A team of researchers from Quaid-i-Azam University of Pakistan and Baku Engineering University of Azerbaijan examined the impact of Pakistan-China free trade agreement (FTA) on exports creation.
