ESCAP and CAREC Institute Report Highlights Digital and Sustainable Trade Facilitation in Central Asia
The Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (ESCAP), in collaboration with the CAREC Institute, has released a pivotal report titled “Digital and Sustainable Trade Facilitation in the Central Asia Regional Economic Cooperation (CAREC) — Based on the 2023 Global Survey on Digital and Sustainable Trade Facilitation.” This comprehensive report underscores the critical role of digital solutions in enhancing trade facilitation and promoting sustainable practices across the CAREC member countries.
The report reveals that CAREC countries are actively implementing various trade facilitation measures, emphasizing the necessity of advancing paperless and cross-border trade initiatives. These efforts are essential for making trade more sustainable and climate-smart. Notably, the report discusses the establishment of 25 modules in various CAREC countries aimed at facilitating the exchange of data and electronic documents across all transport modes, including eCMR, eCertificate of Origin, and eTIR.
A significant contribution to this report was made by the CAREC Institute, which played a vital role in supporting data collection and validation within the region. The institute provided valuable insights into best practices and reviewed the report, ensuring that the findings reflect the realities and challenges faced by the region. Dr. Ghulam Samad, a key contributor from CAREC Institute, emphasized the importance of regional cooperation, stating, “Enhancing trade facilitation measures is not just about improving efficiency; it is about fostering economic resilience and sustainability in the CAREC region.”
In conclusion, this report is an essential resource for policymakers, trade practitioners, and stakeholders in Central Asia. It not only outlines the current state of trade facilitation but also offers a roadmap for future improvements. The focus on digital and sustainable trade practices is particularly crucial for fostering economic growth, enhancing regional integration, and addressing climate challenges. As CAREC countries navigate the complexities of global trade, this report will be instrumental in guiding their efforts towards a more efficient and sustainable trading environment.
