Global Symposium in Chengdu Addresses Green and Low-Carbon Economy Strategies

7 Dec 2024

The International Symposium on Ecological Environmental Protection and the Development of Green and Low-Carbon Economy in China was held on December 6-7, 2024, at Southwest Minzu University in Chengdu, Sichuan. The event focused on addressing pressing ecological challenges such as environmental pollution and biodiversity loss, in line with the Ecological Civilization. Bringing together experts and scholars from around the world, the symposium fostered collaboration and explored innovative solutions for sustainable development and ecological conservation, underscoring China’s commitment to a greener, low-carbon future.

Dr. Hans Holzhacker, former Chief Economist and consultant for the CAREC Institute, highlighted the growing impacts of climate change on the CAREC region during the meeting. He pointed out that the region is increasingly vulnerable to environmental disasters, including droughts, floods, and extreme temperatures, which threaten both livelihoods and economic stability. Dr. Hans called for stronger cooperation between think tanks and universities to develop innovative adaptation and mitigation technologies, crucial for addressing these challenges effectively.

Dr. Hans also addressed the concerning levels of greenhouse gas emissions per unit of GDP in several CAREC countries, urging policymakers to prioritize sustainable practices in key sectors such as energy and agriculture. By promoting collaboration and investing in sustainable solutions, the CAREC region can not only mitigate the adverse effects of climate change but also lay the foundation for a more resilient and prosperous future.
