The CAREC Institute has organized the 4th CAREC Think Tanks Development Forum (CTTDF) in Xi’an, the PRC, in cooperation with the Asian Development Bank (ADB) - PRC’s Regional Knowledge Sharing Initiative (RKSI) and International Economics and Finance Institute (IEFE) at the Ministry of Finance of the PRC.
The CAREC Institute and the Asian Development Bank Institute (ADBI) held a joint workshop together with the Ministry of Economy and Sustainable Development of Georgia and the International School of Economics at Tbilisi State University (ISET) on the topic of comparison of economic integration in Asia and Europe on 30-31 July 2019 in Tbilisi, Georgia.
The CAREC Institute held its 2nd Advisory Council meeting in Tashkent, Uzbekistan on 28 June 2019.
With the aim to bridge critical data and analytical gaps in the economic information systems in the CAREC region, the CAREC Institute organized a workshop in partnership with the Asian Development Bank (ADB) and the Islamic Development Bank (IsDB) on the economic globalization statistics, paired with a conference on mapping value chains on 10-15 June 2019 in Jakarta, Indonesia.
This 6-day Workshop on 2008 System of National Accounts: Enhancing the Quality of Key Economic Indicators was delivered in Nur-Sultan on May 20-25, 2019 jointly with the Asian Development Bank (ADB).
The CAREC Institute has partnered with UNIDO and leading academic institutions in the region to deliver a workshop on economic diversification in the CAREC region aimed at deepening the understanding of characteristics of resource dependent economies, importance of industrial development strategies, particularly export oriented industries, to achieve economic diversification, and enhance capacity of CAREC countries to improve their competitiveness. The workshop was held on 16-17 May 2019 in Ulaanbaatar. The 17th Ministerial Conference of CAREC, on 15 November 2018 in Ashgabat, issued a policy advice to member countries to increase export diversification through promotion of conducive environment for the private sector, and identification of measures to advance industrial and investment policy for specific sectors based on best practices in Asian countries. With this workshop, the CAREC Institute responded to the policy advice by the Ministerial Conference of 2018 to enable economic diversification in member countries.
Asian Development Bank (ADB) and CAREC Institute partnered with the Azerbaijan State Customs Committee to conduct the subregional workshop that aims to discuss the application of specific customs-related provisions of the World Trade Organization (WTO) Trade Facilitation Agreement (TFA) for Azerbaijan, Georgia, and Kazakhstan.
Based on research evidence, CI believes that the key to economic diversification and growth is SME. SME has been a recurring theme of CI's programming. During the past two years, CI has conducted workshops on SME development and SME financing. The logical next step is to explore trade financing of SMEs engaged in trade in order to review the challenges in SME trade financing for increasing SME trading for the broader agenda of regional integration.
The CAREC Institute in support of and close collaboration with ADB and ADB Institute is organizing a two-day research conference from 29 to 30 November, 2018 at Nazarbayev University, Astana, the Republic of Kazakhstan.
Special Economic Zones is one of the force multipliers for economic growth. Shenzhen Miracle is one of the key lessons to be learnt for CAREC economies. The country-specific workshop, which CI held in Pakistan, was a huge success and CI intends to replicate it and disseminate the knowledge widely in the region.

The workshop aims to showcase the growth and experience of the People's Republic of China (PRC) in the renewable energy sector. Multiple cities in PRC have various best practices to demonstrate.
Tourism has emerged as a key sector in regional economic cooperation and is the driver of people to people contact. Many member countries have expressed their keen interest in learning about affirmative actions for promoting regional tourism as a key sector for economic diversification. CI is taking the lead in conducting this exploratory workshop on tourism promotion.
This workshop will be designed to dig deeper into River Basin Management and Flood control issues in the region, which is vulnerable to climate change and natural disaster. This workshop will also invite officials from East Asia for sharing intraregional experiences.
This workshop is part of the larger initiative of ADB's ERCI. CI will take care of the regional aspect of this initiative. ERCI is conducting a project on CB of member countries on data collection, collation, and presentation of national accounts. This workshop will be an experience-sharing of these in-country initiatives.
The workshop gathered experts from development partners to discuss the continuing improvement of the CAREC Corridors Performance Measurement and Monitoring (CPMM) and promote the broader use of CPMM data in CAREC countries.
This workshop will inform member countries about regional countries taxation structure and contractual regimes to enable inflow and outflow of FDI.
Over 100 participants from development partner organizations, think tanks, business sector, and universities from CAREC member countries attended the forum. Participants exchanged knowledge and research on contemporary development challenges facing the CAREC region.
