CAREC Institute Hosts Inaugural Research Talk on Water Deficit and Hydrogen Production: Central Asia Perspective
The CAREC Institute’s inaugural online Research Talk Series commenced on October 15, 2024, with a focus on the implications of water scarcity for hydrogen production in Central Asia. This initiative aligns with the Institute’s strategic commitment to advancing downstream research activities, including policy dialogues and the CAREC Chai initiative at the conclusion of studies. However, it also underscores the importance of fostering upstream discussions, where research ideas are refined before moving to the implementation phase.
Traditionally, the Institute has sought to strengthen both internal collaboration and external engagement during the early stages of research development, such as the drafting of concept notes and proposals. “The Research Talk Series provides an invaluable platform for researchers to exchange ideas and receive diverse perspectives from their peers. This intellectual exchange is crucial for refining and shaping research proposals before advancing to the next stage,” said Dr. Ghulam Samad, Chief of the Research Division at the CAREC Institute.
Moderated by Dr. Samad, the webinar featured a distinguished panel of speakers, including Dr. Vladislav Zavadskiy, Senior Research Specialist from the CAREC Institute; Mr. Nicholas Pomeroy from Cranfield University; Mr. Ramil Shakirov from Schneider Electric; and Dr. Yan Lijun from the Karamay Joint Research Institute of Advanced Science and Technology. The discussion centered on the pivotal role of green hydrogen as a sustainable energy source and its potential impact on the region’s water resources.
Dr. Zavadskiy highlighted the CAREC Institute’s unique position as a knowledge hub and think tank, stating, “We are uniquely positioned to connect researchers, businesses, and policymakers, driving green hydrogen initiatives across Central Asia.” The session explored opportunities for regional collaboration and knowledge sharing to promote hydrogen production strategies, while also assessing the feasibility of establishing a water-hydrogen market. The discussion emphasized the importance of public-private partnerships in securing financing for large-scale hydrogen projects.
Summarizing the event’s objective, Dr. Samad remarked, “This Research Talk aims to identify key areas where the CAREC Institute can develop research concept notes and engage meaningfully with stakeholders.” The session concluded with a strong call to action for continued research and policy development to support the region’s transition to sustainable green hydrogen.
The Research Talk Series is set to become a cornerstone of the CAREC Institute’s efforts, providing researchers with a platform to refine and direct their work, ultimately leading to more impactful outcomes for the region.
